Thanks to its fabulous scenery and favourable weather conditions throughout most of the year, the Tarn is a cyclist’s dream. Winding roads, undulating landscapes and scant traffic make for a tranquil and thoroughly enjoyable ride through vineyards and charming Occitanie villages. Whether you want to challenge yourself to ride past stages of the Tour de France, or prefer to leisurely weave between the vineyards, there is a wide range of routes to choose from.
The region is host to several popular cycling events during the year – possibly something to consider when planning your holiday in Tarn! Here are a few of the best known events:
The first cyclosportive of the season, La Ronde Castraise starts from Castres and takes you through the "Sidobre" and "Montagne Noire".
This sportive is slated for late May or early June every year, and in 2017 featured as part of the UCI Gran Fondo World Championship. The sportive is close to the historic city of Albi, with the longest stretch leading north of Albi on "la route des Bastides".
Laurent Jalabert was a world class competitor during the nineties and early noughties. The event is held every August in honour of the French champion in his hometown of Mazamet.
La 77ème semaine fédérale internationale de cyclotourisme 2015.
In 2015, the International Federal Week of Cycle Tourism was held in Albi and attended by more than 15,000 cyclists from all over Europe. The event website is active still and provides route maps and useful information about cycling in the Tarn.
